The problem with taking advice online is that many people preach what they haven’t or don’t practice. When they talk about highly contextual ideas like whether to go freelance or full-time, they say it like it’s black and white. Going full-time or freelance depends on your current situation or level of experience.
Freelance if:
You’re just starting and looking for small gigs to build your portfolio.
You’ve worked full-time for a few years and can live on your savings if you don’t get a client for one calendar year.
You have a primary focus, like being a student or a small business owner.
Go remote full-time if:
You need capital to help you achieve a bigger vision.
You want to achieve work-life balance.
You have recurring bills and need a reliable income source.
If you want to grow your work and income, it is not a good idea to go freelance early in your career.
However, there’s a middle ground between both, which is the best spot to be. You work like a freelancer but with “full-time” benefits, and it’s called contract work or retainer. But that’s a topic for another day.
