Have you ever had a meeting that’s super critical that you had to join in 30 mins before to set things up? This could be a job interview or some investor meeting.
One thing I’ve realised is - gadgets will disappoint you when you need them the most. So, it’s not about having the fanciest gadgets. It’s about perfect timing.
When you prepare for a meeting 30mins early to test your mic and all, then you go back to something else, only to join in at 2:00 to find out your camera needs software updates. This can be hard to explain to anybody since your intention was to join early.
What has worked for me so far is preparing for a meeting 1 hour earlier to test your mic, camera and everything. Be sure, the meeting link is the correct one and your background is ok. When this is done, then you want to join in 5 mins early and wait until the host joins. In fact, I’ve had meetings start before the meeting schedule.
If you join 30-15 mins early to test things, there’s a chance your gadget fails you and you’d need more time. Or everything is fine and you sit idle. Spoiler alert, there’s a good chance you’d be distracted between that time, and you’d join in late.
The sweet spot is to prepare at least an hour earlier, then join in 5 minutes early. If you are sure everything is fine, you can join at the exact time.
Stay focused.
