Some of the most selfish professionals I know are music artists, especially in Nigeria. They spend so much time working on their craft, sending jabs to haters, talking about how lonely they feel and how much weight of the world they feel. But you know how much of that impacts the other person? Zero. Zilch. Nada.
Their goals are mostly selfish, and add little human capital, besides getting people high on life. The likes of Fela are remembered till today because they didn’t just sing, they channeled social problems.
And if you look beyond music artists, you’d find comedians too, the Guinness record breakers and “vote for me” people. To make matters worse, they promote mostly gambling and alcohol brands to their own people.
No matter what you do, your work should extend to social impact, and it’s not just about giving people money. Your work in itself must demonstrate that you care about the future of humanity.
So, don’t be selfish. Teach others what you know. Talk about social issues. Create positive solutions in your little way. Help build your nation as much as you build yourself.
Stay focused.
